Catan: Seafarers (1997) | This expansion added shipping routes which are very similar to roads, along with a range of different variants for setup including water hexes. The base game is required to play this expansion. |
Catan: Cities and Knights (1998) | This expansion increases the game's complexity, adding knights, who can be built along roads and 3 new resources. Knights are useful for claiming some intersections, moving the Robber and defending against Barbarian attacks. The 3 new resources (paper, cloth and coins) are acquired from cities and are needed if players want to build city improvements which can give a range of bonuses. |

Catan: Explorers and Pirates (2013) | This expansion is played over 3 islands rather than one, with 2 of the islands initially unexplored. It also introduces ports in place of cities and the provision of gold when receiving no resources on a die roll, which can be used to trade for resources or to escape from pirates. There are 5 different scenarios in the expansion - Land Ho, Pirate Lairs, Fish for Catan, Spices for Catan and Explorers and Pirates. |
