Knights are useful for claiming some intersections, moving the Robber and defending against Barbarian attacks. The 3 new resources (paper, cloth and coins) are acquired from cities and are needed if players want to build city improvements which can give a range of bonuses. |

It also introduces ports in place of cities and the provision of gold when receiving no resources on a die roll, which can be used to trade for resources or to escape from pirates. There are 5 different scenarios in the expansion - Land Ho, Pirate Lairs, Fish for Catan, Spices for Catan and Explorers and Pirates. |
